CBSE Class X Exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed the continuation of offering all current languages for the 2025-26 session with this clarification coming after the concern over CBSE’s draft policy on Class X board exams due to the possible removal of some languages such as Punjabi.

CBSE clearly stated that the draft date sheet given on February 25, 2025, was only suggestive, implying that the conclusive list of languages and subjects is yet to be finalised.

Key Highlights Of CBSE's Clarification

The CBSE’s notice addresses fears connected to languages being offered in the 2025-26 academic session. It alerts students and other stakeholders that the languages will still be provided. Important Notes:

  • All languages that are on offer will still be operational during the 2025-26 session.

  • The draft date sheet was tentative and should be regarded as a suggestion.

  • Languages such as Punjabi, Russian, Nepali, Limboo, Lepcha, Sindhi, Malayalam, Odia, Assamese, Kannada, Kokborok, Telugu, Arabic and Persian will continue to be taught.

  • The addendum was issued due to the public outcry and the political backlash in Punjab about the alleged dropping of Punjabi.

Why Was This Addendum Issued?

This addendum was issued after concerns emerged regarding the potential dropping of the Punjabi language within CBSE’s draft scheme for the new board exam conducted twice a year.

Education Minister of Punjab, Harjot Singh Bains, had been highly critical of the CBSE alleging that the board plans to completely scrap Punjabi as a second language in classes 10 and 12. This prompted political leaders across Punjab to demand an official response.

CBSE’s New Board Exam Reform For 2025-26

CBSE recently put out a proposal to significantly change the Class X examination structure by recording two board exams every academic year from the 2025-26 session onwards.

Important Highlights of the New Policy Include:

  • Is by the NEP 2020 on the suggestion to combine class X and XII board exams to be held twice a year.

  • Lessen the academic load by providing students with more than one chance to score better.

  • Shift from rote learning to focus on competency-based examinations.

  • The best marks availed from both attempts will be taken into account.

  • Schools, teachers, students, and parents are requested to provide feedback regarding the policy by March 9, 2025.

Conclusion

The CBSE addendum resolves the issues surrounding regional foreign languages like Punjabi by clarifying that no language will be phased out for the 2025-26 session. Additionally, the CBSE is looking to implement a two-exam format aiming to ease the burden of students regarding board exams.
