Monsoon Woes: Check If Your Motor Insurance Covers Damage From Floods

In light of the monsoon and rain showers taking place all across the country, motor vehicle owners find themselves surrounded by several concerns: Does my insurance policy cover damages from floods? It is crucial to choose an insurance policy after assessing the climatic nature of the area you live in.

People living in areas prone to floods, cyclones or other natural calamities require insurance policies that cover such calamities and save their policyholders from losses.

Which Insurance Policy Is Right For You?

There are two sorts of insurance policies; Third-party insurance policies and comprehensive insurance policies. Third-party insurance policies provide coverage only over damages that are caused by third-party interaction such as hit and run, accidents and so on.

However, a comprehensive insurance policy includes protection coverage from a number of natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, fires and other man-made calamities as well.

Assessing the area that you reside in is necessary to choose the sort of insurance policy that might work the best for you. For example, if you live in a low lying area, it may be prone to flooding during the rainy weather in turn risking damage to your vehicle. In such a case, one must opt for a comprehensive insurance plan that covers such risks.

What All Is Covered Under Comprehensive Insurance Policies?

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is the regulatory authority for all insurance schemes and policies in India. It provides for the inclusion of the following incidents/calamities in a comprehensive insurance policy:

  • Fire, Explosion, Self- Ignition, Lightning

  • Burglary/Housebreaking / Theft

  • Riot & Strike

  • Earthquake

  • Flood, Storm, Cyclone, Hurricane, tempest, inundation, hailstorm, frost

  • Accidental external means

  • Malicious Act

  • Terrorism acts

  • While in Transit by Rail/ Road, Inland waterways, Lift, Elevator or Air

  • Land slide / Rock slide

What Is Not Covered Under Comprehensive Insurance Policies?

The following damages or losses to the value or the vehicle itself are not covered by a comprehensive insurance cover:

  • Wear and tear, ageing of the vehicle

  • Mechanical or electric breakdowns

  • Damages caused owing to driving without a valid Driver’s Licence

  • Intoxicated driving

  • Damages in events of mutiny, war or nuclear attack.

What Are The Benefits Of A Comprehensive Insurance Policy?

The benefits of having a comprehensive insurance policy for your motor vehicle has the following benefits:

  • Both Third-Party and Unforeseen Events: A comprehensive insurance plan covers any liabilities that may arise due to third-party collisions or natural/unforeseen incidents.

  • No-Claim Bonus: Certain policies under this framework also provide a No-Claim Bonus in case no claim has been made. Such a bonus is given at the end of the year.

  • Customisable: Such insurance covers are customisable as per the choice of the customer. Add-ons can be included in the policy to provide extra coverage to certain aspects or provide coverage to non-covered aspects. For example, an add-on may be purchased to cover any damage to the engine of a vehicle due to floods.

Add-Ons Available Under Comprehensive Insurance Policies

The following add-ons are available under Comprehensive insurance plans:

  • Engine Protection Cover

  • Zero Depreciation Cover

  • NCB Protection Cover

  • Consumables Cover

  • Roadside Assistance Cover

How To Claim Insurance For A Vehicle Damaged By Floods?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to claim insurance for a vehicle that has been damaged by floods or other incidents involved in a comprehensive insurance cover:

  • Inform the insurance provider immediately.

  • Record proofs in form of images and videos detailing the incidents and damage caused to the vehicle.

  • Gather the relevant documents of the car such as Registration Certificate, Pollution Certificate, Insurance papers, ID proofs and owner details.

  • Most insurance providers process claims in a digital format now. Make the claim in an online mode or as per the process prescribed by your provider.

  • Once a claim is submitted, further assistance will be provided by the insurance provider.

Conclusion

With floods wrecking vehicles in flood-hit areas of the country, the evaluation of one’s motor insurance policy becomes necessary. A prudent decision must be reached to save one’s vehicle from losses and damages.
