The Indian government announced that E-KYC verification would become mandatory for LPG consumers. Over 27 million households that rely on LPG cylinders have to complete a one-time electronic verification process if they wish to continue receiving uninterrupted LPG refills from their distributors.
The move aims to link all LPG connections with the Aadhaar database to ensure targeted delivery of subsidies. Also to weed out duplication or ghost beneficiaries from the system. This would not only rationalise expenditure for the government but also ensure genuine customers are not denied the gas cylinder subsidy. Mandatory e-KYC will improve the availability of LPG cylinders for citizens.
The government's PAHAL scheme provides LPG subsidies to the bank accounts of below-poverty line families. Further, aadhaar validation ensures one family receives a gas subsidy for only one connection.
Earlier, the e-KYC deadline was extended many times. Yet, consumers who are yet to complete biometric authentication and link Aadhaar will face cylinder deliveries being stopped with no subsidy payment.
Read below to find out more about the benefits, application process, last date to apply, and the need for e-KYC for LPG consumers.

The subsidy will automatically start transferring into the linked bank account after successful Aadhaar mapping.
For manual e-KYC, a hard copy Aadhaar card must be presented at the nearest LPG distributor agency. After biometric verification, the consumer’s UID number will be tagged to the connection.
Consumers yet to register under PAHAL must first enrol at the official government MY LPG website before doing the one-time e-KYC process either online or through agencies.
There is no deadline for consumers to complete the biometric or OTP-based e-KYC process. While some transitional challenges are likely, mandatory e-KYC would bring fairness, transparency, and assurance to LPG distribution over the long term.
The government urges all citizens to complete both Aadhaar linking and biometric authentication at the earliest to receive uninterrupted domestic gas cylinder supplies along with regular subsidy deposits.

The key objectives behind making e-KYC mandatory for LPG customers are:
This will cut fake connections and target the gas subsidy to genuine households only. Currently, over 4.5 crore LPG connections are not linked to Aadhaar numbers.
Mandatory e-KYC will identify and erase duplicate connections that syphon off subsidies. This leakage in the system costs ₹2,000 crore.
With a validated customer base, the allocation of LPG subsidies can be optimised. Currently, over ₹30,000 crore is spent on fuel subsidies alone. E-KYC would rationalise expenditures.
Eliminating duplicity and ghost connections would reduce waiting times for new LPG connections and enhance coverage across India. Currently, 8 crore households do not have LPG connections.
Making e-KYC mandatory for availing LPG subsidies and connections would benefit both the exchequer and citizens. Some noteworthy advantages are:
Weeding out around 4 crore fake connections can save ₹5,000 crore in leaked subsidies per year.
Reduced waiting time for new LPG connections once duplication is removed.
Better targeting of fuel subsidies to genuinely needy households.
Availability of ₹14,000 crore for enhancing capital expenditure once savings begin.
Connecting 8 crore households that still depend on hazardous fuels like firewood.
Empowering women and addressing health issues caused by using raw biomass for cooking.
Enabling portability of connections for migratory populations like students or workers.
Thus, mandatory e-KYC is a crucial step towards ensuring fiscal prudence and customer convenience in LPG distribution. Linking Aadhaar numbers with beneficiary databases has demonstrated results in schemes like PDS and NREGA earlier as well. The streamlining of LPG connections would now have multiplier socio-economic benefits in India.
By making e-KYC verification necessary for all LPG customers, the government aims to plug subsidy leakages and eliminate duplicity and ghost beneficiaries while enhancing coverage. With fiscal savings, more households can be connected to clean fuel sources. Despite concerns about consent and data privacy, mandatory e-KYC is likely to achieve better targeting of subsidies, ensure genuine beneficiaries are not denied LPG refills, empower women, and boost health indicators.
