Since 2014, the Modi government has launched many welfare schemes to improve the quality of life of Indian citizens. These government schemes are on employment, education, health, cleanliness, digital access, and rural development. Government schemes are unique programs administered by a central or state government to resolve specific social and economic issues. As a large, diverse country, India has many citizens requiring better jobs, education, health care, and financial support. Government schemes address these problems via:

The Jan Dhan Yojana was launched on August 28, 2014, by the Ministry of Finance, aiming for complete financial inclusion through a bank account for every household in India. The scheme provides zero-balance savings accounts, along with benefits like RuPay debit cards, accident insurance, and overdraft facilities. It helped link millions, especially in rural parts of the country, to formal banking systems and to receive government benefits directly into their accounts.
The Skill India Mission was launched on July 15, 2015, by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, to train over 40 crores Indians in various skills by 2022. The mission intends to provide not just skill training but market-relevant skill training by providing schemes like PMKVY, Kaushal Kendras, and Apprenticeships. It involves reducing unemployment and promoting self-employment, particularly amongst India’s youth.
The Make in India initiative was launched on September 25, 2014, by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to motivate companies to manufacture products in India, while promoting investment in the manufacturing sector. It covers 25 sectors of the economy and intends to transform India into a global manufacturing hub.
Launched on 2 October 2014 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (Urban) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Rural), Swachh Bharat Mission is the largest cleanliness movement in India, covering both rural and urban areas. The two key components are to end open defecation and to improve the management of solid waste. This scheme has led to the construction of millions of toilets and created immense awareness related to sanitation and hygiene.
Launched on 11 October 2014 by the Ministry of Rural Development, this Sarkari scheme aims to involve Members of Parliament (MPs) who will adopt villages and convert them into model villages. The intention is to develop the listed villages with better infrastructure, education, sanitation, and livelihood, thereby contributing to overall rural development.

Launched on 16 October 2014 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Shramev Jayate scheme is focused on labour reform, enhancing the ease of doing business and providing welfare for workers. The scope of this scheme includes initiatives like Universal Account Number (UAN), skill development, and simplified labour laws to empower workers and increase transparency.
The BBBP initiative was launched on 22 January 2015 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Ministry of Education, to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and the growing concern of education and empowerment of the girl child. It is aimed at generating awareness about CSR and improving access, accountability, and implementation of various welfare services for girls.
Launched on 21 January 2015 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, HRIDAY (Heritage City Development & Augmentation Yojana) aims at preserving and revitalising the heritage character of the cities in India by promoting heritage-based urban development through the development of infrastructure, sanitation, and accessibility in historic cities like Varanasi & Amritsar.
Launched on 8 April 2015 by the Ministry of Finance, the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) provides loans up to ₹10 lakhs to non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises in three categories, Shishu, Kishore, and Tarun in a collateral-free manner, intended to help small business owners especially first time entrepreneurs.
UJALA was launched on 5 January 2015 by the Ministry of Power (MoP), which focuses on promoting energy efficiency via the distribution of affordable LED bulbs and appliances. The government program is operated by EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited), which seeks to reduce electricity bills in households, but also promote environmental sustainability.

PMSBY (Launch Date 09.05.2015 - Ministry of Finance) is an accidental insurance plan that provides accident insurance for death or full disability to the tune of ₹2 lakh and costs just ₹12 per annum to avail. The government scheme aims at providing the economically weaker section of the population, primarily, the unorganised sector social security and protection from accidental loss of life or capacity.
APY (Launch Date 09.05.2015 - Ministry of Finance) is a pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector. Under this scheme, a pension is provided to subscribers on attaining 60 years of age on payment of specified periodic contributions by him/her along with contributions of the Government for eligible subscribers. This scheme got incentivised savings from past savings,25.06.2015- Ministry on a rationed /unit basis.
PMJJBY (Launch date 25.06.2015-Ministry of Finance) is an insurance plan for Life Insurance that takes care of the loss of life by any cause for ₹2 lakh. It costs ₹330 per annum to get coverage for ₹2 lakh. The target group for this scheme is low low-income group, which generally shies away from availing of life insurance plans as there is no money available to them for savings.
The Smart Cities Mission (Launch date 25.06.2015- Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs) seeks smarter cities for smarter citizens. The broad vision is to develop 100 cities across the country by promoting and incorporating smart technology, digital infrastructure and citizen-centric services, smart governance, energy management, transport, and sustainable urbanisation.
Announced on 25 June 2015, at the same time as the Smart Cities Mission, by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, AMRUT set out to improve urban living conditions by offering a better quality of infrastructure, including water supply, sewerage, public transport, and green space, among various cities. The mission's underlying philosophy is "inclusiveness" and to develop basic urban services.
The current schemes are having meaningful impacts on citizens; however, the government can build on these programs creatively and strategically to increase citizen welfare and further India’s progress towards inclusive growth.
