The fisheries sector of Goa faces various challenges like over-exploitation, indiscriminate fishing practices, fish migration barriers, pollution, habitat degradation, invasive species, climate change and lack of proper management. On top of this, when a natural calamity happens, the fishermen in Goa are left with nothing. To tackle this issue the government has introduced a fishermen scheme that will help them get natural calamity relief.
The Department of Fisheries in Goa introduced a fisherman scheme that will help them with natural calamity relief aid. The government scheme provides financial assistance to fishermen who have lost or damaged their fishing vessels due to natural calamities like floods, cyclones, or landslides.
Financial assistance is given to those fishermen in Goa who have contributed to the Fishermen Corpus Relief Fund. Under the fishermen scheme, the fishermen will receive their relief fund after a few weeks of the verification of documents and assessment of the damage.
