Who Are Gig Workers & What Are Their Conditions Like?

All those individuals who are engaged in professions like delivery agents, cab drivers, freelance professionals, etc., are called gig workers. As we are climbing the ladder of development and innovating various online services, the demand for gig workers has been increasing exponentially as well.

But because such workers come under the informal sector of employment, they don’t get to enjoy the usual social security benefits that every employee is entitled to, such as health benefits, education, financial security, etc.

Details Of The First Meeting With Gig Workers

Very recently, the Labour Minister of Delhi, Mr Kapil Mishra, held the first-ever official meeting with gig workers and official representatives from various established companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Blinkit, UrbanClap, and BigBasket. The objective of the meeting was to hear out the living and working conditions of gig workers so that relevant measures can be launched to resolve their issues.

In the meeting, gig workers expressed and spoke about their mundane problems related to various things like unpredictable monthly incomes, increasing cost of fuel, and absence of social security schemes and benefits such as health insurance or paid leaves.

The official representatives from various established companies also raised their issues and needs related to accident insurance, skill development programs, and educational help for the children of the workers.

Establishment Of Welfare Board

In the state of Delhi, there are around 5 lakh gig workers, which represents their huge contribution to the nation’s economy and working. According to a report by the NITI Aayog, the national gig workforce is expected to increase to 2.4 crore by 2029-30.

The state government of Delhi is planning and working on establishing a Welfare Board to improve the quality of life of gig workers. The Board’s primary objective will be to provide access to various social security measures to gig workers and their families. The Delhi Secretariat also assured the workers that the government has already allocated 10 crore rupees for this same issue.

Conclusion

The decision of the state government of Delhi to establish Welfare Boards for gig workers is exceptional and much needed. It would not only improve the quality of life of such workers but also give them a sense of motivation, which is essential for efficient working.
