In a bid to improve the benefits retirees receive after serving in the government, the central government has put into effect the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which now replaces the National Pension System (NPS), for it is meant specifically for government employees. The key objective of this scheme is to offer a sustained pension income, mitigate post-retirement financial risks, and enhance self-management of resources.
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has constructed a simple move process that enables more than 23 lakh government employees to shift from NPS to UPS easily and without complications.
The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is primarily aimed at Central Government employees, providing a more predictable and secure post-retirement benefit structure. Here's a clear breakdown of who can opt in:
Current Central Government Employees enrolled in NPS as of April 1, 2025
Recruits joining central government services on or after April 1, 2025
Retired employees who were covered under NPS and retired before March 31, 2025
Note: State government employees are not currently eligible. Each state will independently decide on implementing UPS for their staff.
Moving from NPS to UPS (Unified Pension Scheme) is now a streamlined process which can be done both online and offline. Whether you are tech-savvy and prefer clicking buttons or like dealing with people face-to-face, here’s how you can make the switch:
Step 1: Visit the official NPS CRA website: https://npscra.nsdl.co.in
Step 2: Navigate to the UPS Migration section.
Step 3: Log in with your credentials.
Step 4: Choose UPS as your new pension scheme.
Step 5: Fill out the application form and submit the required documents.
Step 6: Submit and keep acknowledgment for future reference.
Step 1: Collect the UPS Migration Form from your department or designated government office.
Step 2: Fill in all required details.
Step 3: Attach necessary documents.
Step 4: Submit the form to the concerned HR or pension office.
Shifting from the NPS (National Pension System) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is a significant change in the way your retirement benefits are structured. Here is what you should expect after the migrating:
Your corpus, which you accumulated under NPS, will be shifted to an account managed under UPS.
Pension benefits will be adjusted based on the length of service and contributions made.
In the UPS model, monthly disbursements will be paid after retirement.
The implementation of the Unified Pension Scheme is an improvement that enhances predictability and stability in the retirement planning of all government employees. It considerably augments social security for millions of central government employees with assured pensions and other improved family benefits. If you qualify, remember to go over the conditions thoroughly so that you do not miss the deadline.
