After decades of exhausting the non-renewable sources of the planet and pushing its boundaries for development and growth, the world is finally facing the consequences of its actions in the form of rapid climate change, pollution, deteriorated quality of air, etc. To not harm the planet anymore, governments worldwide are working on various measures that promote sustainability.
One of the measures introduced by the government of India is the Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Scheme. The govt scheme aims to promote the installation of rooftop solar panels for the sustainable development of the nation and the planet as a whole.
Read the article to learn about the details of the scheme, ranging from its meaning and objectives to eligibility and the application process.
The table below outlines some key points about the government rooftop solar scheme that one should be aware of.

The government of India, under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), launched a scheme called the Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Scheme, also known as the SPV System. As the name suggests, the Sarkari Yojana aims to promote the installation of rooftop solar panels and effectively use the natural resource. i.e. sunlight for electricity generation.
There are two types of solar panels that are installed under the scheme: Solar Rooftop Systems with battery storage, and the other one is the Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Scheme. The govt scheme aims to shift the focus from exploiting non-renewable sources of energy to effectively and mindfully using renewable sources of energy.
The Rooftop Solar Scheme comprises various objectives aimed toward sustainable growth. Some of the key objectives it offers are mentioned below in brief:
SPV System works by converting DC power to AC power using a power conversion unit. The energy generated can be effectively used in the daytime for things that require a continuous supply of electricity.
With the installation of grid-based solar panels, the aim is to produce 40,000 MW of total capacity.
There are two phases of the scheme, wherein phase II aims to increase the Distribution Company Involvement (DISCOMs).

There are several benefits of the Rooftop Solar Scheme that help promote the effective use of natural, renewable sources of energy. Some of its key benefits are:
The installation of solar panels helps in reducing the cost of electricity bills.
The rate of carbon emissions also decreases with the Rooftop Solar Scheme.
Installing solar panels is very cost-effective.
The Rooftop Solar Scheme is implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The ministry is responsible for all the components associated with the scheme’s implementation, ranging from innovation and research to promoting the use of clean energy sources like solar, wind, hydro, and biogas.
The government scheme faces some problems when it comes to its implementation. Some of the major challenges faced by the scheme are:
As the solar power panels rely on sunlight for generating electricity, the power isn’t consistent and doesn’t help at night.
Present energy storage technologies are quite expensive, which makes it difficult for people to choose the sustainable option.
The Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar Scheme is a much-needed initiative launched by the Indian government for the betterment of the people, nation, and the planet. It not only promotes the installation of solar power panels in people’s homes but also spreads the message of the usage of clean, renewable sources of energy.
