Scam

Scammers in Hyderabad are getting bolder by the day. Unsuspecting consumers who haven’t paid their electricity bills recently are getting fake disconnection alert messages. These messages not only inform them about the impending disconnection but also direct these individuals to WhatsApp or call a specified number to make a payment to avoid disconnection.

What The Scam Message Looks Like?

A typical scam message reads:

“Dear sir, your power supply will be cut today after 7:30 PM due to last month’s bill not being updated. Call immediately on WhatsApp 8135967194.”

These messages create panic and pressure consumers into taking hasty action—often leading to financial fraud.

How The Scam Works?

As soon as the victim reaches out to the number through a call or message, the scamster acts like an employee of the electricity department. Their typical queries include:

  • Details of debit/credit cards

  • UPI or any bank account particulars

  • Sending an automated link to facilitate the payment of a bill

Those who comply with the directions tend to lose funds from their accounts through unscrupulous means.

Case Studies: Hyderabad Residents Share Their Experience

Ratna Rao Srinivas, a 68-year-old retired government employee from Secunderabad, narrowly avoided being scammed.

“I got the message and immediately called the number. They asked for my debit card details, saying my power would be disconnected. Luckily, my son intervened before I could give any information.”

Meena Shashikala, a 55-year-old homemaker from Hyderabad, also received the message.

“I panicked but decided to double-check on the TGSPDCL website. That’s when I saw my bills were fully paid. I realised it was a scam and blocked the number immediately.”

TGSPDCL Clarifies: These Messages Are Fake

The Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has raised awareness about fraudulent messages and has implored citizens not to take any actions towards them. CMD Musharraf Faruqui, IAS, issued the following clarifications:

  • Notices issued by TGSPDCL always bear the title of the department, service number, consumer name, and bill amount.

  • Such messages do not originate from personal mobile devices.

  • TGSPDCL employees will never request your banking information.

  • TGSPDCL does not send SMS or WhatsApp messages containing links for payment.

  • Electricity is never cut off abruptly or during the night without proper communication being provided beforehand.

Consumers are advised to only check their bill status on the TGSPDCL official website or through the TGSPDCL mobile app.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Scammers often use fear and urgency to trick people, and some groups are more vulnerable than others. Understanding who is most at risk can help prevent these frauds.

  • Senior citizens

  • Housewives

  • Individuals who are not tech-savvy

  • People unaware of current scams

Fraudsters exploit the fear of losing power supply, especially during peak hours, to make victims act without verifying.

What Should You Do If You Receive Such a Message?

If you receive a suspicious message claiming your electricity will be disconnected or asking for payment, it could be a scam. Here's what you should do to stay safe:

  • Do not call or WhatsApp the number.

  • Ignore and delete the message immediately.

  • Verify your bill status only on TGSPDCL’s official platforms.

  • Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs, or bank details with anyone.

  • Report the number to TGSPDCL and local cybercrime authorities.

Conclusion

This scam serves as a very important reminder to be more aware and careful when dealing with anything digital. TGSPDCL has iterated time and time again that they will never solicit sensitive bank details and continue to urge people to be vigilant. If you or anyone in your circle is unfortunate enough to be such a messenger, make sure to report them to avoid further damage.
