An e-passport incorporates modern security features that distinguish it from traditional passports. These features are designed to protect personal data and ensure safer international travel.
Electronic Chip: Since an e-passport contains various aspects of personal embedding in addition to an ordinary machine-readable zone, it has a chip that contains your identification information and biometric data.
Biometric Information: The chip has ID, such as fingerprint and facial identification, to ensure you are the real owner.
Tamper-Proof: As for the chip, once any attempt is made to alter it, the entire passport becomes nonfunctional.
Contactless Technology: This chip will be satisfactory for scanners to read from a short range, so immigration control checks will take less time.
E-passports offer multiple advantages in terms of security and efficiency. They enhance identity protection and reduce waiting time during immigration checks.
Faster Scanning: e-Passports enable visitors to be scanned faster, so that there can be little or no waiting time in airports.
Better Security: Such information degrades the ability of the fraudsters to manufacture fake passports.
Tamper-Proof: e-passports contain additional features that would make it difficult for any unauthorised individual to alter the information stored in any of the documents.
Hassle-Free Travel: With e-passports, passengers can smartly engage automated systems such as the e-gates and which makes travel easy.
An e-passport securely stores various data, including:
Personal Information: Full name, date of birth, the nationality holder, and the passport number of the holder.
Biometric Data: Fingerprinting, face recognition and scanning of the iris.
Digital Signature: This provides data security purposes to safeguarding the stored data information.
E-Passports consist of the usage of a chip that is placed inside the actual document, where your basic details, together with your biometric details, are stored. In addition, by scanning the chip, border control can confirm your identity much quicker, thus it is more efficient and secure. The data is encoded and password-protected, and hence only those with proper passwords can access the data.
Applicants can complete the e-passport process conveniently through the official Passport Seva portal. The online procedure is simple, structured, and time-saving.
Step 1: Go to the Passport Seva website and select the option to either ‘register’ or ‘login’.
Step 2: Choose Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport.
Step 3: Fill in all the information about you without any mistakes in the online form that is to be filled out.
Step 4: Documents must be attached, and a form must also be filled out and forwarded.
Step 5: The fees to be paid have to be paid online, and an appointment has to be made at the nearest passport Seva Kendra.
Step 6: Attend the passport office for the capture and verification of biometric data as per the date and time booked.
Individuals preferring in-person services can apply for an e-passport via designated Passport Seva Kendras. The offline method involves the following steps:
Step 1: You must physically go to a Passport Seva Kendra, or you can download the form from the official website.
Step 2: Fill out all the fields of the application as soon as possible, but in the most precise manner.
Step 3: Ensure you have all the relevant personalised identity documents, including proof of residence.
Step 4: Pay the amount through a demand draft at the Passport Seva Kendra where you are applying.
Step 5: After you have sent your application, you will be issued with an Acknowledgement Letter with a tracking number.
Specific documents are necessary for the e-passport application and verification. These include proof of identity, address, and date of birth, among others.
Address Proof: Any of the following identification documents, a voter ID, Aadhaar Card, a Utility Bill or a Bank Passbook.
Date of Birth Proof: Allowed documents are Birth certificate/ School leaving certificate, PAN Card/ Aadhaar card/ Voter ID card.
For Re-Issuance: Give your original passport, a copy of your first and last page and other necessary pages that you may have.
This is because an e-passport acts as a biometric passport; therefore, if you lose your e-passport while in a foreign country, the best thing to do is to report the loss to the police, Passport Office or the Indian Mission. To get a new passport, one has to fill in the necessary documents and information from the previous passport. In case you do not have the details, you should seek help from the Indian Mission/Post.
The introduction of e-passports in India is a good development in making travelling safe and efficient. This new system of passports will ensure more security and hence would make travelling to other countries easier for Indian citizens.
